PLEASE NOTE. This posting consists of TWO Notices:
1. Storm Update from the First selectman
2. Notice of Public Hearings, Zoning Commission

Good evening this is First Selectman Mark Lyon.

The 2 CL&P crews assigned to Washington have been working diligently to restore power however there is only so much 5 men can do when 25% of a 33 square mile Town is without power. The latest report shows our outage number has been reduced to 423 from a high of 690. If your power has not been restored please continue to report to 1-800-286-2000; this will assure that your outage is counted and show if your problem is isolated from a larger incident. CL&P has hired Private Licensed Electrician’s to address individual service problems so please report any problem to 1-800-286-2000.

There are no plans to open a shelter at this time but special needs can be addressed by contacting the Selectmen’s office between 8:30am & 5pm.

My thanks to the Washington Primary School parents and the Washington Lions Club for a great Halloween event at WPS last night.

If you are counted among the 85% of residents who have power please offer shelter or assistance to someone who does not.

Storm Sandy update:

While only the storm remnants remain the clean up and recovery is far from over. The Town Highway crew has been working 18 hour days with 2 different shifts of CL&P crews to clear downed trees and wires so all residents should have at least limited access after tonight.

Currently 25% of Town residents are without power and we do not anticipate restoration to begin until Wednesday at the earliest as CL&P resources have been focused on harder hit areas. If you are without power please report it to CL&P on their automated reporting line 1-800-286-2000; this will keep them informed of the volume of our continued problems when restoration schedules are set. If you are among the 75% with power please reach out to friends and neighbors who do not.

On a POSITIVE note, travel bans have been lifted and the Lions Club Children’s Halloween Party at the Washington Primary School will be held at 5:30pm Wednesday Halloween night. Due to the continued power outages and travel difficulties before the Party there will be a “Trunk and Treat” in the WPS parking lot starting at 5pm. All are welcome; load your treats in your trunk and join in this community event.

This is First Selectman Mark Lyon with a Storm Sandy update.

The storm is expected to peak Monday night into Tuesday with high winds and light to moderate rainfall. Increased winds have taken down trees and wires in many locations. All downed wires should be considered live and dangerous.

Currently the Town Highway Department is working with CL&P crews in an attempt to keep local roads clear and power restoration has not commenced.

The Emergency Operations Center will be open through the night and can be reached at 860-868-7403. We are urging people to stay home for the duration of the storm.

Any emergency should be reported using normal 911 telephone calling procedures.

First Selectman Mark Lyon with information regarding the pending storm:

High winds and moderate rainfall are predicted for our area between Sunday evening and Thursday morning.

We are prepared for but DO NOT anticipate widespread flooding. However residents should prepare for widespread, extended power outages caused by high winds and falling trees.

The Washington Emergency Operations Center at the Depot Firehouse will be open by 8am Monday morning and can be contacted at 860-868-7403.

Any emergency should be reported using normal 911 telephone calling procedures.

The Washington Emergency Operations Team will continue to monitor local conditions and has contingency plans in place if warranted.

Update on the May 2 fire at the Town Highway Garage

The Connecticut State Fire Marshall office has completed it's on site investigation. The exact cause of the fire is not known at this time however it has been determined that the cause was not malicious and no evidence of foul play was found. The site is now under the control of CIRMA, the Town's property insurance carrier, and the garage area will remain cordoned off until the completion of their investigation.

The Town has received too many offers of equipment and assistance from neighboring towns, contractors and vendors to accept. The Selectman's office and Highway Director Kevin Smith are putting together a plan to reequip the Highway crew through these generous offers and we should be back in full operation in very short period of time.

The garage and contents are insured and we are working with CIRMA's insurance adjustors providing information on the loss insure the claim will be complete.

It will most likely take weeks or months to determine the complete cost of replacement and reconstruction at which time the Selectmen will work with the Board of Finance to address any financial issues that may arise.
