Letter to the Editor

The Board of Selectmen of the Town of Washington has asked Chuck Isselee, the Chairman of the Region 12 Board of Education, and Washington members of the Board of Education to present and explain information relating to the construction of a new high school track at a public meeting to be held at Bryan Memorial Town Hall at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21.

We agree with the Capital Program Committee of the Board of Education that a new track is needed. The borrowing rate is currently low. We do not want to repair something now that we might soon have to totally replace.

The vote in our Town against the funding options was fairly substantial, and we have grave reservations about asking the voters to come out to do it all over again. However, we feel that the wording in the first referendum and the options regarding the associated costs and funding were very confusing to many people. Therefore, we support a revisit to the question at a referendum to be held on May 23 (between noon and 8 p.m.) at the same time as the vote on the school budget. This referendum will not include the soccer field.

We hope that you will come to the informational meeting on the 21st and will come out to vote at the referendum on the 23rd.

And, don't forget that our May Town Meeting to vote on our municipal budget and several other items will be held following the referendum on Thursday, May 23, at 8:30 p.m.
