The Town of Washington has announced plans to pursue the purchase of a 31-acre parcel in New Preston for the purpose of preserving it as open space. The town has negotiated a $500,000 purchase price with the property’s owner, Washington Partners, LLC, which, if approved by town residents, would be underwritten with previously allocated money that has accumulated in the town’s open space fund.
The 31 acre parcel is located at 108 New Milford Turnpike, adjacent to New Preston center with frontage along Route 202 and Flirtation Avenue. The property includes woodlands, open meadows, watercourses, and prime farmland soils, together with a large pond and steep hillside, which are clearly visible from Route 202.
The proposed purchase was initiated by Washington’s Conservation Commission, which has oversight responsibility for the town’s Open Space Fund. The fund, which was established by local ordinance in November 2003, receives money through annual budget allocations, gifts, and fees collected in lieu of open space in connection with subdivision applications. An expenditure from the town’s open space fund requires the approval of the Planning Commission, the Board of Selectman and the Board of Finance before proceeding to a town meeting, where voters ultimately decide on any proposed purchase.
A SITE VISIT and an informational session will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2009. The site visit will be at 9:30 AM at 108 New Milford Turnpike, New Preston, followed by an informational meeting at the New Preston Congregational Church at 10:30 AM.
The Board of Selectmen have scheduled a SPECIAL TOWN MEETING to vote on the proposed open space purchase for 7:30pm April 8 at Washington Town Hall.
